Words

Mixing panels of fabric and colour is a huge trend in Japanese fashion this season. It makes sense, as the menswear market continues to grow at an accelerated rate, more and more people are looking for a way to distinguish themselves from the pack. As opposed to the heavy-handed application of this technique by quite a few brands, Digawel chose to do a subtle indigo dip-dye, striking a nice balance between new and old.

Weekend Viewing: World on a Wire

01

Video

—01. Directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

Words

Welt am Draht, or World on a Wire, is a truly peculiar film. Based on the book Simulacron-3 by Daniel Galouye, legendary German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder turns the existentialist piece of literature into to a Sci-fi film that oozes style in a way that other films in the genre couldn't imagine. World on a Wire was wildly ahead of its time in every sense, close to every scene is a revelation in one way or another. This was the first film to suggest we are all living in some form of simulated world, beating The Matrix to this idea by about 30 years. Never before, or since, has a Sci-fi film with such complex themes been handled in such a darkly comic way, thanks in great deal to the absurdly stern lead performance from Klaus Lowitsch. This film was lost for decades, but was recently resurrected by The Criterion Collection, and it is only a matter of time before it is listed with Godard's Alphaville and Tarkovsky's Stalker as one of the great Sci-fi films of all time.

BROWN by 2-Tacs Brown Mugs

Words

Ritualistic coffee drinking, by nature, is an activity that deserves a mug that one might want to use over and over. Vintage mugs are always a good option, but there are lots of companies out there that imbue the drinking vessels they make with their own stamp of creativity, and this example utilizing traditional Japanese methods is incredible.

Terry Adkins – Nenuphar

Info

Salon 94
1 Freeman Alley & 243 Bowery
New York, NY
October 30, 2013 – January 11, 2014

Words

When you enter the spaces in question you get an immediate sense that you are viewing a series of long lost artifacts – possibly a key to the past, possibly the future. This is due to a unique approach to historical narrative in the artist Terry Adkins' work. In the case of this particular exhibition, he was inspired by the strange similarities between American renaissance man George Washington Carver and modern art innovator Yves Klein. Even if you choose not to attempt to decode the complex systems within the work itself, you will certainly still enjoy how beautiful the individual pieces look placed around either of the gallery's New York locations.
