Roger Herman Ceramics at South Willard

Info

August 3 – September 3, 2014
Opening Reception: Sunday, August 3, 3pm – 5pm

Words

The regular shop exhibits at South Willard offer yet another reason to stop by the small and selective LA store. This month ceramicist Roger Herman will be displaying his colorful and inventive wares, and with plans to be in LA myself next week, I'm personally looking forward to seeing the collection in person.

New High (M)art

Address

1720 N Vermont Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90027

Words

Spending the last couple of days in LA has been nice, and a few retailers have stood out so far. The no camera zone, better known as New High (M)art, is one of them. A beautiful, relaxing and inviting space, it offers mostly womenswear, but there is a variety of incense, books, ceramics, accessories and some beautiful Kaptial footwear.

Words

Developed for the Total Trattoria project, these coaster clusters were designed by London-based artist Martino Gamper. Available in four colours and two sizes, they are an interesting take on a very simple product. Gamper breathes new life into an often mundane object, creating something useful and visually unique.

08sircus Multi Knitting Cardigan

01

Images

01. Made in Japan.
02. Wool/mohair/nylon blend.

Words

Although New York summer is definitely in full swing, it's never too early to start daydreaming about fall. This cardigan would be the perfect garment to add to the fantasy as it includes nearly every fabric, texture, and colour that make Fall-Winter collections so superior to those aimed at the hotter months.

LVC 1967 505-0217 ‘White Nights’

Words

I don’t generally subscribe to pre-distressed denim, preferring to apply my own fingerprint to the aging process, but this version of the 505 from LVC looks like a perfectly worn pair of vintage jeans. The slim, straight cut is probably my favourite fit right now and Levi's have shown some welcome restraint in the distressing department, leaving you plenty of room to put your own stamp on them.

Converse 3-Panel Chuck Taylor 1970 Ox

Words

While not as understated as the numerous solid colour '70s Chucks out there, this red, white and blue version might be the right choice for those that appreciated the ‘stars and stripes’ model released earlier this year, but felt they couldn’t quite pull them off. Slightly more wearable than those, the tricolour design feels simple enough but is sure to attract a little more attention than standard editions.

A Book of Glyphs by Ed Sanders

01

Images

01. 160 pages.
02. ‘Gnarl Moth’ glyph.

Words

Ed Sanders is a legend of New York City’s 1960s LES art scene and after reading his biography and general recounting of the era, Fug You, I’ve become pretty obsessed with his work. Responsible for Fuck You: A Magazine of the Arts, the Peace Eye Bookstore and the folk-rock group The Fugs, as well as numerous books and poetry collections, Sanders seems to be a little closer to the respect he deserves. This book of 72 glyphs, created in 2008 and released this year, features a series of simple coloured pencil drawings imbued with a sense of humour and visual style that have been a trademark of Sanders' poetry and mimeograph printed zines since 1962.

Weekend Viewing: Zane Lowe meets.... Rick Rubin

Info

Facilities courtesy of Amos Clarke & Eric Lynn
Produced by Lee Edmenson

Words

Although it was published earlier this year, I only just got a chance to watch Zane Lowe's interview with Rick Rubin. As one of the music industry's most unsung heroes and influential contributors, he opens up about working with a variety of musicians, the different processes, his start with Def Jam and his admiration for the artists.
