Arthur Russell – World of Echo

01

—01. Released on Audika Records

Words

Arthur Russell is an under-appreciated icon of 1970s New York City experimentalism; at one point even acting as musical director of the legendary Soho venue, The Kitchen. The music he produced throughout his career touched on such diverse genres as minimalism, pop, country and disco until his death in 1991 from AIDS. World of Echo, released in 1986, is arguably his seminal and most accomplished work, utilizing only voice, cello and echoes to create drumless, restrained and meditative soundscapes. This approach is filtered through his distinct sensibility by stripping away the extraneous trappings of pop music and used to interpret the language of minimalism already developed in the previous decade by luminary artists such as Steve Reich, Brian Eno and Terry Riley. In the process Russell created a wholly unique album that asserts his important role in 20th century experimental music and proves that his idiosyncratic viewpoint is essentially peerless. In 1987 he perfectly encapsulated the thesis of what this record is about with the statement: “In outer space you can’t take your drums – you take your mind."

Runner's Journal: Footwear

Words

With a solid month of training down, and a little over two to go, I'm feeling faster. I can feel the benefits of the group runs and hill repeats already – something that I'd never done before, and probably wouldn't have on my own. I've implemented more omega-3 fatty acids, have been drinking a lot of tart cherry juice, and have been more conscious about eating carbohydrates before runs, but especially after, in the recommended 4/1 ratio to protein, something I was surprised to learn. In terms of achieving this easily, Vega has been a great option so far.

The last two clinics in the training course have focused heavily on injury prevention. Besides actually running a lot, this is probably the most vital aspect of preparing for the marathon, and certainly my biggest concern...

Carl Auböck & Table of Contents Leather-Wrapped Bronze Stones

01

–01. Five sizes.

Words

I feel as though I’ve seen an increasing amount of Carl Auböck pieces more widely available as recognition for the Austrian designer and company continues to grow, but I’d yet to see a collaboration. At the end of 2014, the Portland-based shop Table of Contents released five Auböck paperweights made from brass, based on the classic leather-wrapped stone which dates back to the 19th century.

Weekend Listening: Jimmy Johnson

01-02. Portraits by Paolo Azarraga.

Words

I came across Jimmy Johnson for the first time after he released In God We Trust last year, followed by a handful of singles including standouts 'Sun Goes Down' and 'Northside'. The young rapper-cum-singer has a unique sound, partially due to his creative partnership with producer Eric Dingus, but also because of his relatively mature perspective. After having spoken with Jimmy last summer, it was clear to see that he was not your average 22-year-old, both sonically and in the way he's releasing projects and developing his career. In November he issued Red Ferrari, which I keep going back to. With definite influence from 808s and Heartbreaks, and more subtle inspiration from Toronto natives Abel and PND, Jimmy provides his own perspective and offers an impressively restrained EP, especially for somebody so young. It's yet to be seen whether he'll be next in line for OVO Sound, but I am anticipating another productive year in 2016.

Anatomica Trim Fit Pants

01. 65% Polyester, 35% Cotton.
02. Navy.

Words

Simple, basic trousers that feature a contemporary cut and interesting details aren’t the easiest to come by without having to make some compromise in either fit or finishing. These are one of better pairs I’ve come across recently and, much like the rest of the French brand’s offerings, are sure to live up to expectations with their tapered fit and interesting use of a snap button at the waist.

Stan Brakhage Essential Cinema at Anthology Film Archives

Words

In 1970, the Anthology Film Archives began a project to define the breadth of art in cinema. Although it was never completed, their Film Selection Committee did put together 110 programs comprising 330 films and these form the Essential Cinema Repertory collection. These programs are now regularly shown at the NYC film museum and prove to be quite a rare treat, chronicling the work of acknowledged classic filmmakers next to legends of the avant-garde, such as Kenneth Anger, Jordan Belson, Maya Deren and Stan Brakhage. Starting this weekend, Brakhage is the subject of a retrospective which includes a number of his '50s and '60s films and the program will be a welcome exhibition of one of the 20th centuries most innovative artists in the medium of celluloid.
