Studio Visit: Jody Rogac by Aaron Wynia

Image

01. Jody's Gowanus studio.

Words

Toronto-based photographer Aaron Wynia has a habit of visiting other photographer's studios, and last time he was in New York he went to see Jody Rogac. He's been a fan of her work for some time, citing Jody's attention to detail, elegant composition, and the sense of calm in her images as the things he appreciates most. While Aaron dug around the Brooklyn space, he found out that she's been working on a new book with her friend, Sara Cwynar, which is something we very much look forward to seeing.

SoundCloud Spotlight: JIIN – Cult Hymns

Images

01. Portrait by Han Dasom.
02. EP cover art.

Words

Can any music really be new at this point? It seems unlikely on one hand, yet on the other, the climate of the industry, the internet and the accessibility to software today is creating a group of musicians and producers that sound new to me. House, drone, drum and bass, R&B and hip-hop feel more like reference points than categories sometimes, as the blending and blurring of sounds continue to evolve. Spending most of his time in Toronto, JIIN released a 7-track EP entitled Cult Hymns last week, and it's another example of this progression. Of course the idea of mixing genres isn't a recent thing, but the output of an increasingly young and talented generation is really interesting, and if nothing else, they have me excited about music again.

New York Painting at Kunstmuseum Bonn

01

Image

01. Love Boat by Joe Bradley, 2013.

Words

"After the genre of painting had been declared dead for several decades, it has been enjoying an impressive renaissance with a generation of artists at its base that accept no dictation of what to do and what not to do. It is without reservations and with every confidence that especially those artists born in the 1970s and early 1980s experiment with the medium of painting, which is why the show in Bonn will put its focus on this generation. The exhibition will include recent and latest works by eleven artists, ranging from the painterly experiments of Matt Connors, to the wild post pop painting of Eddie Martinez, to the neo-conceptual approaches of Antek Walczak and Ned Vena. Without prioritizing one painting style, the show will document the panorama of the genre of painting that has left its ideological battle for its existence behind and returned to playing a major role in art again today."

Nike Air Presto Lightning QS

01

Image

01. Quick strike release.

Words

The Nike Air Presto is an interesting shoe that comes from one of my favourite eras in the brand's history. The performance benefits it had in 2000 might be a little outdated, but it's still a style I'm particularly fond of, and the sock-like fit makes it an appealing casual option. I'm not usually one for wild patterns or prints on footwear, but for some reason the lightning motif just works on the Presto.
