Words

This Saturday, Rochelle School in London's East End is hosting the first in a series of summertime events organised by Several. The menswear brand and retailer are lucky enough to call the beautiful location home, and they've invited the likes of orSlow, Honest Jon's, Spring Court, Sun Buddies and Antenne Books to join them for what is likely to be a unique shopping experience. To add to the appeal of the occasion, lunch and dinner reservations are available at Rochelle Canteen, who will also have a food and drink stall on the lawn for the duration of the day. Music will be provided by a selection of DJs and entry is free of charge.

DJ Slyngshot – Cycles

01

Image

01. Available on 12-inch vinyl.

Words

DJ Slyngshot runs the German label Yappin Records, and seems to use it mainly as a vehicle for his own productions. That can often be a tiresome formula, but considering their quality and diversity, I'm sure no one is complaining. These particular tracks feel like they were assembled in the future by someone who found a lockbox of old radio parts. Each is a totally unique journey of funk and dust, that will definitely push your toes to the pavement.

Weekend Listening: Tiger

Words

Whether I liked it or not, Dancehall was a mainstay in the various vehicles of my Bay Area youth. For an individual like myself, who preferred the harshest rap, metal, jungle and techno the world had to offer, a large portion of the islander riddims were too tame for my taste. One artist who left me with nothing to complain about though was three decade deep Dancehall MC, Tiger. His signature growl of a delivery leaps off the record like a slap in the face, and coupled with a pummeling 909, forces your most base human instincts to rise to the surface. At the end of last year, and not a second too soon, Honest Jon's and Hard Wax's joint label Dug Out rereleased this tune on 7" vinyl.
