Although he's issued two RRL titles and one about Marilyn Monroe, most of the publications that Tom Adler produces focus on iconic imagery from the annals of surf and climbing culture. To coincide with the recent release of An Uncommon Archive, a new volume from T. Adler Books that "draws from the seemingly disparate worlds of surfing, fashion and style, fishing, music, fine art, rock climbing, travel and adventure," T Magazine caught up with Tom at his Padaro Lane home near Carpinteria, California.

I was aware of the role Brion Gysin played in creating the incredible Dreamachine light sculpture, but until reading William Burroughs’ latest biography, Call Me Burroughs, I didn't know how innovative an artist and thinker he really was. Having introduced Burroughs to the cut-up technique, it’s hard to say where one of the most famous beat writer’s careers may have gone without him. "Neo-calligrapher, master of line, multimedia revolutionary and cultural historian, Gysin’s experiences in New York, Tangier, Paris and London influenced his seminal artistic productions." Judging by the imagery online, this seems like an outstanding exhibition, and a welcome return for an artist who had his first solo show in the UK at the very same gallery.

Every summer I find myself lusting after one of Star of Hollywood's incredible short-sleeved shirts. An eBay search turns up next nothing vintage-wise, so the licensed reproductions by Toyo Enterprises offer an appealing alternative. Click on the brand's name in the tag section below to see the mind-blowing version from last year that I still regret not getting. Fortunately, this one is equally outstanding. Made in Japan from a slubby cotton fabric, it features a perfectly boxy 1950s cut alongside a tasteful graphic treatment referred to as "Unholy Boomerang," which wasn't originally available with a black background.
