Viberg Black Unicorn Rough Out Hiker Boot

01

Words

When the Fall-Winter season rolls around I always welcome the appearance of more substantial footwear styles. Viberg collaborations are something I particularly look out for and The Bureau has just received a nice selection of custom models, all of which ring true with Canadian company's hardwearing origins. The Hiker boot, born out of an exchange of patterns with Danner in the 1970s, is one of my longtime favourites and this almost all-black version is especially appealing. Built on a Vibram Gloxi-Cut sole, it features a rough out moose hide upper and gunmetal hardware for something a little more unique, yet no less functional.

Created under his Journeymann Trax moniker, the disco-influenced collection is perfectly suited to the height of summer, evoking relaxing beach days and cool dips in the water.

There are no shortage of desirable trainers hitting the market these days, especially from Nike. The brand's recent Air Max 95 push is a welcome one, as long as they keep producing colourways like this. Featuring a mix of Black and Anthracite materials to create subtly contrasting textures, the 20-year-old design continues to feel quite modern.

America Is Hard to See

Info

Whitney Museum of American Art
99 Gansevoort Street
New York, NY 10014
May 1 – September 27, 2015

Words

The Whitney Museum of American Art is currently holding the inaugural exhibition at their new building on New York City's High Line. It runs until September 27th and is bound to resonate with anyone who has an interest in 20th century painting, sculpture, photography and filmmaking. Acting as an historical survey of the major events in American art during this period and a record of the Whitney’s acquisitions, there are more than 600 works on show, separated into 23 distinct chapters which group together like-minded artists from concurrent eras. As is often the case with such ambitiously assembled exhibitions, not everything on show will be to everyone's taste, but it does feature important pieces from all movements and a number of lesser-seen works. The Scotch Tape chapter particularly appeals to me, with contributions from Bruce Conner and Al Held, as well as Jay DeFeo’s more than 1500 pound sculptural masterpiece, The Rose.

Words

Agnes Martin seems to be having a well-deserved moment in the sun with a retrospective at the Tate Modern, which runs until October 11th before heading to Dusseldorf, Los Angeles and New York. To coincide with the exhibition, the renowned London-based art museum has released a definitive monograph, featuring early works, Martin's striped and gridded paintings, and a series of her final pieces. The publication also includes a selection of drawings, watercolours and critical essays, creating a wonderful overview of one of 20th century art’s most enduring icons, as well as a testament to a strong female figure who made a name for herself in the veritable boy’s club of minimalism.

Words

Heath have brought back Japanese potter Akio Nukaga for another exhibition of his outstanding ceramics at their Los Angeles studio and showroom. Visitors will be able to view new works from his Mashiko kiln, including pleated vases, cups and teapots which evoke his customary style, as well as new techniques like the indigo glaze utilized in his Blue Band Collection. Be sure to pick up the richly textured, longer neck Bud Vase he produced with Heath as a collaborative piece, since I’m sure supplies are very limited.
