From July 17th until October 19th, the Whitney Museum of American Art will be exhibiting Collecting Calder, a retrospective of the work of Alexander Calder. The New York City institution boasts the largest collection of Calder’s work in the world and will be exhibiting his drawings and sculptures, giving equal representation to the two main aspects of his output. Calder’s Circus – miniature circus-themed dioramas rendered from wire, string, cork, wood, paper, metal and cloth – will be shown alongside the whimsical mobiles he is known for, as well as static sculptures he called ’stabiles’. This exhibit is a must for anyone one who is interested in the American artist and wants to see a large selection of his work collected in one venue.

Hine Desk Objects

Words

Designer Andrew Hine has produced an understated selection of desk accessories, handsome enough to be left out on display but also highly functional. Reminiscent of the simplicity of Japanese and Scandinavian design, these objects have been produced in the UK by craftsmen utilizing the finest materials, such as American black walnut, beech wood and boar bristles. Founded in 2013, the emerging company has succeeded in producing a modest collection of classic items that can be used every day and will last long enough to be passed down from generation to generation.

A.P.C. by Louis W. Fall-Winter '14

Words

I'll be honest, when the Louis W. line from A.P.C. started showing up, I wasn't exactly sure what the deal was. Who was Louis W.? Why were the jackets so expensive? Well, it turned out the former was an eight-year employee of the A.P.C. design team, and the latter was because they're leather jackets, and leather jackets – good ones – are almost always expensive. While I can't ever really imagine myself in a traditional leather piece, I am a fan of the classic suede bomber style, and appreciate concise, well executed collections. I also like the family feel Jean has created in letting this collaboration come to light, and allowing a new voice to shine from within his company. You can view the Fall–Winter '14 collection from Louis W. by following the link below.

Weekend Listening: Charles Cohen

Info

Morphine Records, 2013

Words

The last few years have seen steadily rising vinyl sales, punctuated by reissues and so-called special editions, making it all too easy for some of the truly special releases to pass you by. One such cornerstone record is Charles Cohen's The Middle Distance; released last year on the groundbreaking Morphine label, it is part of a three-LP compilation comprising of music originally recorded between 1979 and 1988. While listening to Charles' work, you'll undoubtably make strong associations to experimental minimalist composers such as Terry Riley, but due to Charles' mastery of the ultra-rare Buchla synthesizer, his sound has a life of its own. The rhythms are complex and the sound design ranges from anywhere between lush and transformative to harsh and chaotic, making it impossible not to draw parallels with so many of the experimental dance music artists working today. With these records finally finding their way to the public this late in his career, it really makes you wonder what other genius unsigned artists are hiding unexplored in their local music troupes and theatre groups.

Words

Few shows I've seen have tried to fit this many different items and ideas into such a small space. From art to jewelry to ceramics, when you walk into Salon 94, you are quickly greeted with anything and everything the fashion designer Duro Olowu finds inspirational to his process, as well as items he created for the show itself. It's almost dizzying attempting to take it all in, but who's complaining when you have work by Caroline Achaintre, Glenn Ligon, Juergen Teller and many more all in one place.

Final Home Rain Jacket

Words

Considering the fashion world has been openly obsessed with technical outerwear for years now, it's surprising to me that Final Home hasn't been more actively involved in its popularity of late. They were one of the first brands to pioneer the multi-zip, apocalypse-prepared fashion pieces that Undercover, Gucci, and Acronym all produce regularly, yet you rarely see Final Home in the streets or on the internet. As long as their 'basics' line keeps producing incredible and functional jackets like the one pictured, I'm sure they'll be poised to return to the top.

Words

One of my very favourite places, hosting a retrospective exhibition of works by one of my very favourite sculptors. Is there much more I need to say, to explain why I'm so excited about undertaking my first seasonal trip to Beacon, New York in a few weekend's time? Well, if there is, then the New York Times review of the show linked below should help fill in any gaps, and provide some context to anyone unfamiliar with the American minimalist sculptor's work.

While I already have a closet full of unworn outerwear, purchased on the cheap at the tail end of the winter season, it's hard not to be excited by the new FW14 offering from Stone Island. I never tire of working my way through their fall collections, picking out the wearable from the boundary pushing, and for every piece I want, there's always several others I can't help but admire. You can start your own wish lists by following the link below, where you'll find newly released campaign images alongside a video showcasing some of the season's most impressive and interesting pieces. Exceptional as always.
