Omer Arbel at Monte Clark Gallery

Info

Monte Clark Gallery
#105 - 525 Great Northern Way
Vancouver, BC V5T 1E1
January 31 – February 28, 2015

Words

Omer Arbel is probably one of Vancouver's most exciting and innovative designers. While he's based in Berlin part-time, he launched Bocci here and his design firm is also still in Vancouver. His work in lighting is highly regarded and very successful, and it's in developing those ideas that the 'mistakes' on display at Monte Clark were created. Works '30' and '71' are on show until the end of the month, and are well worth having a look at if you're interested in Omer's progression.

Oren Ambarchi – Quixotism

Words

Australian experimentalist, Oren Ambarchi, has long been exploring a world of sonic discovery, wielding his guitar in unorthodox ways and making sounds normally not akin to the omnipresent stringed instrument. His latest record, Quixotism, recorded on four continents, is a collaboration with numerous experimental luminaries and pairs his unique approach to guitar playing with a vast array of instruments – from drums and electronics to a more unconventional deployment of contact mics and brushes. Quixotism is a densely layered exploration of intricate sonic textures, and as such deserves to be played loudly to fully appreciate the world of tonality contained in this singular piece, broken into five parts. Already released digitally on the Editions Mego website, the LP can be expected to drop on March 3rd, but can also be preordered now.

The Foxfire Collection: Volume 1-9

01

Words

Outside of platforms like Ebay, it’s often hard to buy collections of desirable publications in one place, at one time. While this set does not comprise all of the Foxfire books that have been released since the first volume in 1972, it does represent the vast majority – only missing three editions that were issued quite a bit later. The material for the books actually started as Foxfire magazine in 1966 at the Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Georgia, chronicling Appalachian culture and eventually morphing into an anthology of articles originally written for it. These books are a great example of experiential education and are filled with interesting oral history, craft traditions, how-to pictorials and backwoods imagery.

Commes des Garçons Homme Spring-Summer '15

Words

Haven has recently received a handful of appealing shirts and pants from Commes des Garçons Homme for Spring-Summer. Most of the shirts exhibit a visually interesting array of overlapping patchwork patterns on timeless button-up styles. The pants are more classic and elementary in their design, combining a straight, slightly loose cut with a garment dyed, washed cotton gabardine fabric.

–01. 79 days to go.

Words

One of my goals at the start of the year was to run a marathon in 2015. I've been running for about two and half years now and having completed a handful of half-marathons and a variety of trail races, I felt like it was time to take the next step. With the support of Nike Running and Vancouver's Running Room, I'll complete that goal in 79 days at the BMO Vancouver Marathon.

Margaret Howell have just updated their website with this season's mainline and MHL campaigns. The former, captured at the De La Warr Pavilion in East Sussex by Alasdair McLellan and styled by Beat Bolliger, is particularly striking. Follow the link below to see the rest of the images, and visit Margaret Howell, in person or online, for a closer look at individual pieces from both collections.

Her Perfume Tears is a book of photographs, artwork, poetry and lyrics from the NYC-based musician, artist and activist Lizzi Bougatsos, who is a member of the bands Gang Gang Dance and Angelblood. Released in a limited run of 350 copies and published by Boo-Hooray and Exile Books, it is sure to sell out quickly. If you need any more incentive, each copy comes wrapped in a beautifully designed, origami-folded dust jacket with a zine focused on her poetry and songwriting process, titled Enchanted By Her Squalor
