As anyone who has visited the Church Street Dream House installation in Manhattan can attest, experiencing one of La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela’s sound and light environments is unlike anything else. The pervasive wash of magenta-tinted light and the densely textured sustained sound composition seems to fill every available measure of space, and has continuously been doing so in this location since the fall of 1993. Before the longest running of all the Young and Zazeela’s Dream House installations, they had produced different iterations on this theme at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Moderna Museet, Documenta 5, and the Guggenheim – just to name a few.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of one of the Dia Art Foundation's earliest efforts after its establishment in 1974: the Dream Festival. To commemorate this event, the organization is hosting a newly acquired site specific version of La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela’s Dream House at their Chelsea location. Entitled Dia 15 VI 13 545 West 22 Street Dream House and created in collaboration with Jung Hee Choi, it includes Young’s sine-wave sound environment, Zazeela’s sculptures and light design, and Choi’s Ahata Anahata, Manifest Unmanifest IX. There is an extensive calendar of events and performances throughout the installation’s run, with the first happening on June 13th and many others running into the fall.

The multi-talented, Auckland-based sculptor Gidon Bing, known for working in the mediums of wood, metal and ceramic, has created a number of beautiful vessels which enunciate a calm minimalism through their sturdy, simple forms and attractive French khaki colouring. Everyday Needs currently has a selection of different sized bowls, as well as a tall, footed vase – all of which would look great in any home, holding court in the middle of a table for decoration or used purposefully during a meal.

Works on Paper at Greene Naftali

For only a little while longer, the Greene Naftali gallery in New York will be hosting an exhibition in their eighth floor space featuring a variety of works on paper by a vast selection of artists. Some of the participants include Richard Aldrich, Ed Clark, Tony Conrad, Joan Jonas, Paul Sharits, Paul Thek, and Charline Von Heyl. A large number of the drawings and paintings in the show were produced in 2015, but it also features some important works from previous decades, including a 1983 acrylic painting by the underappreciated Paul Thek, and one of Tony Conrad’s early '70s Yellow Movies, that stretched and redefined what is thought of as a film.

It shouldn't be, but a good white hat is hard to find. Thanks to an excellent tip from a good friend, I've sorted the baseball cap side of the equation for the summer months, but the elusive well-fitting bucket is still proving tricky to track down. Or it was, until I discoverd the Quaker Marine Supply Co. Tennis Hat, over at Bermuda Trips. Available alongside the Swordfish Cap, both options are not only pretty much perfect for the warm weather and sun stroke avoidance, they're also increasingly harder to find, due to the company going out of business a few years ago. A sad thing when you consider they could once count both Hunter S. Thompson and Earnest Hemingway as customers and fans.

Bountiful by Noah Emrich

New York-based photographer Noah Emrich's new book Bountiful is a collection of photos he took during a mostly solo 12,000-mile trip in a minivan around the United States during the summer of 2013. Emrich set out on a less traveled path, avoiding major highways when possible, allowing himself to see and discover beautiful things like huge rock formations and redwoods along the coast and small quaint towns. He also encountered lots of depressed 'Main Streets' that always seemed to feature a liquor store and quite often a Family Dollar, but little else. He wanted to "capture the American landscape," one that, five years later, was still recovering from the financial crisis of 2008. Emrich sums it up best, "These are only slight glimpses of a public culture shifting over time."

Rodin, Brancusi, Moore: Through the Sculptor's Lens

Sauntering around the commercial galleries of London's Cork Street is always a pleasure, but the Waddington Custot for me, really cuts the mustard. It’s been part of my West End art circuit for over a decade, and never disappoints. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen a bad show there, but their latest exhibition is a mark of curatorial genius, and smashed my former favourites to pieces. Through the Sculptor’s Lens presents vintage photographs from the studios of heavyweights Constantin Brancusi, Henry Moore and Auguste Rodin, providing us with an intimate glimpse into the daily working lives of these masters of the 3D form. Sepia shots of studies, lost works or those that were since destroyed show us how photography became an integral part of the development process for each and every masterpiece. Brancusi was personally introduced to photography by Man Ray, and subsequently went on to take and print his own, most of which now reside in the Pompidou Centre, Paris. Rather than undertake the job himself, Rodin chose to commission a range of professional photographers to document his numerous sculptural blockbusters, requesting experimentation on angles and lighting effects. Hailing from Yorkshire myself, Moore has always been the one for me, clean-cut and capable of producing colossal works, it’s ironic his dad was a coal miner, chipping away at hard stuff all his life – like father, like son. The experience of seeing their personal visual journals, brought together under one roof, was a total joy – and well worth a visit.

DJ Slyngshot – Cycles

DJ Slyngshot runs the German label Yappin Records, and seems to use it mainly as a vehicle for his own productions. That can often be a tiresome formula, but considering their quality and diversity, I'm sure no one is complaining. These particular tracks feel like they were assembled in the future by someone who found a lockbox of old radio parts. Each is a totally unique journey of funk and dust, that will definitely push your toes to the pavement.

After last season's well-received first edition, the next instalment of Hostem's ongoing editorial series has just been released. Beautifully shot on location at a disused swimming pool by London-based photographer Rory van Millingen, the story features a selection of men's and women's product from the current collections of Dries Van Noten, Lanvin, Yohji Yamamoto, Loewe, Visvim, Thom Browne and Raf Simons, among others. All of the items featured are available from Hostem's online store as well as their shop on Redchurch Street in London's East End.
