Pod Tune: Humpback Whale / Human Collaborative Music Project

01

Image

01. Proceeds support Ocean Alliance and Blue Mind.

Words

Pod Tune is a collaborative compilation project, involving various influential experimental musicians using field recordings of the communication between humpback whales. Pairing ambient luminaries such as Loscil, William Basinski, Christina Vantzou and many others, with a variety of vocalchord-less cetaceans may sound like a gimmick, but it actually makes for a really incredible and relaxing outsider excursion. If this kind of weirdness sounds like something up your alley, as it most certainly was mine, it’s well worth following the link below for a listen.

Engineered Garments Lt Parka Navy Polkadot Taffeta

Images

01. 100% nylon.
02. Made in the US.

Words

Engineered Garments always do a great job breathing new life into fabrics that can sometimes feel a little mundane or otherwise tired on their own. The Lt Parka uses a simple navy nylon with a polkadot pattern, but its versatility, adjustable length and simple details, make for a great spring or early fall jacket, and a useful piece for winter layering.

TAKAHIRO MIYASHITA The Soloist Rib Neck Sweater

01

01. Wool knit.

Words

Haven's Fall-Winter '15 offering from The Soloist is perhaps their best to date. There's plenty to pick from, including some of the more wearable garments – like this rib neck sweater – as well as the affected and intricate pieces the brand is so well-known for. It's hard to go wrong with a black wool raglan sweater, and something so straightforward can still feel interesting and well-designed, making this sweater extremely appealing at this time of year.

The Apartment by The Line – Los Angeles

Info

8463 Melrose Place, 2nd Floor
Los Angeles, CA 90069
Tuesday-Sunday, 11am-6pm

Words

The Line might be best considered a purveyor of beautiful things; from objects and clothing to homewares and digital content. And they have recently opened their second apartment atelier, following the success of the original New York enterprise. The new Melrose Place location is now open, and showcases the same pared back, refined and luxurious taste that gained the original concept store such a fine reputation in the first place.

Hippie Modernism: The Struggle for Utopia

Info

Walker Art Center
1750 Hennepin Avenue
Minneapolis, MN 55403
October 24, 2015 – February 28, 2016

Words

“This Walker-organized exhibition, assembled with the assistance of the Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive, examines the intersections of art, architecture, and design with the counterculture of the 1960s and early 1970s. A time of great upheaval, this period witnessed a variety of radical experiments that challenged societal and professional expectations, overturned traditional hierarchies, explored new media and materials, and formed alternative communities and new ways of living and working together. During this key moment, many artists, architects, and designers individually and collectively began a search for a new kind of utopia, whether technological, ecological, or political, and with it offered a critique of the existing society.

Presenting a broad range of art forms and artifacts of the era, Hippie Modernism: The Struggle for Utopia features experimental furniture, alternative living structures, immersive and participatory media environments, alternative publishing and ephemera, and experimental film. Bringing into dramatic relief the limits of Western society’s progress, the exhibition explores one of the most vibrant and inventive periods of the not-too-distant past, one that still resonates within culture today.”

01. Set of four.

Words

While the FW15 Engineered Garments collection is a very good one, I'm an even bigger fan of the pin set the New York-based brand has made to accompany the offering. Featuring a mix of designs, themes and references, some more obvious than others, the set is available through select retailers now.

Alden One Piece Slip-on

01

Image

01. Calf leather.

Words

The Japanese shop Doo-Bop has worked with longstanding US footwear specialists Alden, to produce an exclusive pared down slip-on. Cut from a single piece of supple cowhide, this unique model would be a great choice for anyone searching for a loafer style devoid of tassels, penny detailing and other classic attributes. For me the beauty of this shoe resides in its no-nonsense design, as I often find these other bells and whistles too traditional, or else a little superfluous.
