Words

With locations in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and Portland, Self Edge has just opened its first shop outside the US, at the tip of the Baja California Peninsula in San José del Cabo. The interior is clean, bright and airy and the store's offering maintains the same commitment to high-quality, vintage-inspired products, with a bit more of a warm weather focus. Situated down a dirt road on a valley farm with a series of other retailers, it's a truly beautiful destination shop that's a little off the beaten path.

Open Air Modern

Words

I love poking around on 1stdibs. I’ve never purchased anything from the site, but it’s a great way to while away your time, inevitably seeing several outstanding pieces of furniture or design that you’ve never laid eyes on. Every so often I also discover a really good physical store that is operating as an online retailer via this high-end shopping portal. Open Air Modern, based in Brooklyn, is one such example, bowling me over recently with this incredible Hans Wegner swivel chair as well as many other rarities.

1205 Layer Shirt

01

Image

01. Concealed pockets on the outseam.

Words

This unique piece from 1205 evokes feelings of a classic C.P.O. shirt, while simultaneously nodding to the recognizable rounded placket shape of a blazer. Made in Italy from wool, cotton and nylon, the fit is modern yet boxy enough to accommodate cold weather layering. But what really grabs me is the construction of the casual, wide set collar.

Q&A with Fumito Ganryu

01. A child of Comme.

Words

While Ganryu was launched in 2007, we've only begun to see its presence in Western markets over the past few seasons. Following Junya Watanabe's trail, both as a pattern maker and then with his own collection under the Comme des Garçons umbrella, Fumito Ganryu has created something unique within the realm that the overarching brand occupies. His line offers a fresh approach to wearable items, with a goal of creating "free and forward-looking" pieces. Oki-ni spoke to him about his inspiration and the AW15 collection.

Diary: How to Improve the World (You Will Only Make Matters Worse)

Info

Written by John Cage
Hardcover, 176 pages
6 x 8.5 inches
Published by Siglio Press, 2015

Words

"It is a mosaic of ideas, statements, words, and stories. It is also a diary. For each day, I determined by chance operations how many parts of the mosaic I would write and how many words there would be in each."

As the quote above states, John Cage authored his version of a daily diary over 16 years – complete with intertwined observations, obsessions and jokes – in the same way he composed much of his music. One of the 20th century's most visionary and enduring avant-gardists he was a strong and vocal proponent of operations of chance, from his use of the I Ching throughout his life, right down to his aleatoric compositions. Co-edited by Joe Biel and Richard Kraft, Diary is brimming with non-standard text treatments and is a thought-provoking assessment of Cage's methods of composition, making it a beautiful and intriguing work of art in its own right.

Human Made Hawaiian Lady Shirt

01

Image

01. 100% cotton.

Words

Nigo’s Human Made line has released one of the oddest aloha shirts I have ever seen. Which is perhaps the reason I find it so appealing in the first place. The graphic features a large-scale topless Hawaiian beauty, oddly placed on the back of the garment and primitively rendered in a flourish of muted watercolours. With many of us lamenting the loss of summer, the restrained colour palette and 100% cotton fabric make this a smart choice for transitioning into the season ahead.

Royal Doulton Olio Teapot

Words

This year the British homewares company Royal Doulton is celebrating its 200th anniversary by producing a series of collaborations with artists and designers. One such offering is the Olio range, by Edward Barber and Jay Ogersby. Crafted from durable stoneware, wood and stainless steel, it evokes a more casual feeling than normally found in Royal Doulton’s traditional bone china designs. The collection has been designed to blend seamlessly with the existing items in one’s home, and this teapot, which is currently available from Everyday Needs, would appear to do just that.
