Demo is the name of a new group exhibition currently on display at Signal gallery in Brooklyn, featuring site-specific work by friends and contemporaries Jesse Hlebo, Andrew Laumann and Nicholas Gottlund. Thematically the works are tied together through their exploration of the breakdown in systems on both a global and social scale, and include a new piece by Nicholas Gottlund, featured above, entitled Solo, 2014 which has been made using cast paper pulp.

It will come as no great surprise that some of my proudest contributions to the magazine, revolve around the work I've been able to do with some of my favourite artists, designers and creatives. The piece on Gottlund Verlag in the latest issue, is a perfect example of this, and while the bulk of the story focussed Nicholas' book press, I'm glad we were also able to touch upon his own work as an artist. Some of his most recent – and most striking – works revolve around the use of folded materials, with the above made using copper. I strongly recommend checking in regularly on both his website and blog, to stay abreast of all things Gottlund related.

Nicholas Gottlund – Make Ready

Info

April 18th - May 1st, 2013
Opening Thursday April 18, 6-8pm
39 Great Jones Street
New York, NY

Words

Opening tonight at Karma's newly opened Great Jones Street location, MAKE READY is an exhibition of printed work from artist and publisher Nicholas Gottlund. The show features an archive of one-off publications Nicholas has made, alongside the matching pair he produces each time, to insure he has a spare in case something later goes awry; an A and a B. As Nicholas himself describes it: "It is how these separate yet linked objects relate to one another when viewed in the same space that demonstrates their making most clearly."

Released by Shelter Press in an edition of 150, this 48 page zine looks at Nicholas' relationship between photography and the printing process. Using a book his family printing company published in 1972, entitled Farming Always Farming, as both inspiration and content, the zine features photographs of the original book, obscured by corse halftone dots that reduces the images to abstract shapes and tones.
