Max Bill Variation 12 Poster

Max Bill’s poster designs may not receive as much attention as other Bauhaus schooled designers, but it is the basic tenets of ‘continuity’, ‘development’ and ‘invention’, not to mention the tasteful use of a variety of colours, that make his Variation series so successful as works of art that can be hung in any home. Released with permission from the Max Bill Foundation in 2007, these are a great, affordable option for adding some brightness to your wall.

The pool of finely made automatic watches is very deep and choices are almost too endless. Canoe has three variations of the classic style designed by Max Bill in 1962 and produced in Germany. Their neighbours to the south, and Bill's home country, may get most of the acclaim when it comes to timepieces, but these clean designs are a great alternative that will always rival comparable Swiss-made watches.

Ulm Stool by Max Bill

Words

It is the complete simplicity of the Ulm Stool, created as a utilitarian seat for the school at which Max Bill acted as dean, that makes it such an attractive piece of furniture. It has no superfluous details, yet functions as a stool, a shelf, a serving tray or a side table – just to name a few. It's no wonder the design school's workshops were full of them, and it works just as well in a home.

The 189 recently posted some great images of the Ulm School of Design by Hans G. Conrad. The school is well-known because of its founders and professors, and the unique curriculum which was largely influenced by the Bauhaus. The article is well worth looking at, as are the images courtesy of Rene Spitz's Flickr stream.
