Carl Andre by Diane Waldman

Info

Softcover, 82 pages
44 artworks
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, 1970

Words

I’m a little surprised that this original Carl Andre catalogue, which was uploaded to the Book/Shop website in early November, is still available. Relating to an exhibition at the Guggenheim that ran from September 29th to November 22th, 1970, this volume features 44 of the artist’s works, as well as an essay by the curator Diane Waldman. If that sounds at all interesting, grab this copy before it’s removed from the shop on January 5th.

Book/Shop LBR-2 Book Bench

Words

I have no idea how I missed the release of the outstanding LBR-2 Book Bench back in March, but better late than never is certainly an adage that applies to these kind of things. Book/Shop does a great job of dreaming up simple wooden furniture designs that integrate beautifully with your book collection and its surroundings. Made from a solid piece of FSC-certified lumber that is planed down and joined to its legs with finger joints, the LBR-2 comes in both walnut and ash versions which, to their aesthetic benefit, forego the use of nails and screws completely.

Words

The SSB-1 is one of the most interesting compact bookcases on the market, providing a more attractive way to house some of your publications, rather than just shoving them between a couple of bookends. Hand cut, much like the previous birch version, this edition comes in a beautifully grained walnut ply which has been rubbed with a beeswax finish. No assembly is needed, other than slotting the pieces together, so you’ll be ready arrange your favourite or most read texts in no time.

Steel Bookends From BOOK/SHOP

Words

Although I predominantly buy books to make my apartment look more intellectual, I do occasionally read one or two of them along the way. The bookcase we have was found on the street, weighs a ton, and truth be told is pretty ugly. These little chaps might improve it a little, and would definitely look the part if I ever got around to putting a shelf or two on the wall. Then again, that might also look like I'm trying too hard. Conundrums.

Book / Shop is a new project undertaken by the always insightful and well-read Erik Heywood: "We're committed to the reading experience. The surprise of one page turning to the other. The little luxury of sitting in a great reading chair, inhaling the scent of a beautifully made book. The luscious heft of three or four good reads in a sturdy bookbag as you head out into the world. The hundred discoveries waiting at a used bookstore; the refuge of a library. In addition to books, we'll offer those irresistible things that go along with them; things like bookcases and reading chairs, reading lamps and bookplates, bookbags and book-related artworks. We believe that a well-made reading environment encourages us to take our time, to have those experiences with books that modern life tries to replace with a rush of empty conveniences."
