I'm a big fan of the short novel, or novella, and one of my favourite short-form writers of the last few years is Alejandro Zambra. The Chilean writer's first book Bonsai was published in 2006 and was this year turned into a wonderful film by director Christian Jimenez. Zambra is wont to discuss and dissect the growing and breaking stages of love, alongside the methods, excitement, and pain of writing. He also quite likes plants. His second novel, The Private Life of Trees, was released just a year later in 2007, and both books are available in English language translations.
