Words

We received the latest addition to the Stockroom last week. We're big fans of Crescent Down Works, Sierra Designs and the like, but after getting a look at Mt. Rainier Design, we were confident this brand was best in class in terms of styling, fabrication, design and finishing. The 60/40 fabrics are great and come in rich, beautiful colors. The reversible down vests are definitely stand outs, but the slant pocket parka with grey wool lining can't be overlooked. And for those in need of a bit more warmth, the down parka in tan with a green interior is very classic. We also picked up some of their Nordic leggings for some great functional variation.

Waist measurements on the "one size" leggings?

They are comfortable from 30-34 I'd say.

The inseam is roughly 30-32 as they have some stretch.

And, they're awesome.

Where are these made?
October 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterS
They are all made in China with the 60/40 fabric being made in the US.

Nice stuff, personally I'd say Rocky Moutain Featherbad looks a bit more special for the cash though. Either way, I'm stuck with my fifty quid Penfield this winter.

ps. the leggings are a winner

yeah where's the down parka?

Made in China!? I thought it was Japan. Oh, well. The pieces look okay though.

^Rocky Mountain is really nice, but its a fair bit more expensive and I do feel like the leather might be a bit too much for me personally. These are made in China, but they are well made - great fabrics. They fit well too - I definitely back this product.
The down parka is coming, we just haven't had a chance to photograph it because we're finishing Issue 03 off this week.
Thanks

I think that the days of the Made in China paranoia are now over.
As you should know Rocky Mountain Featherbed down vests are made in China for the Japanese market and made in Japan only for the overseas snobbish market (the fabrics are the same) - both are just great.
The only thing that I don't know is where the down feathers are from... but I guess they may not be from Canada.

Oh, I'm not knocking made in China products, I just never knew that this brand manufactured its pieces in China. Always thought they were Japanese made, particularly when reflecting upon the prices. Just want to know what separates this from...O, say a brand like Penfield. I wish I knew more about their fabrics and overall manufacturing process.

I do like the products on their website though. Pretty good selection. Seems they outsource their premium fabrics like Visvim.

Objecting to items being 'Made in China' is not just paranoia. Some people like to support established companies that make authentic products, not just 'versions-of' made in anonymous factories by commission.

Others think it's nice to support niche manufacturers that excel at just a few things, that prop up traditions of making in economies where tangible work has been largely outsourced.

That mustard yellow parka with grey wool lining is damn nice though.

Also, China as a dictatorial regime is not something some people like to endorse by choices in consumption. Just saying.

Anyone else feel like some Chinese food now ?
October 16, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterThom
True... but please no morals !

I'm sure that to save some people's life you are looking for a macbook or a Led tv made in the US, well good luck.
Authenticity is following tradition which is about education not about race nor frontiers ; you wouldn't talk about Japanese americana then, would you?

What I meant is that there are already many well crafted products made in China and that in Japan people do not look down on that point like in our hipster's forum.
It's all about quality control !!!

In the 70's people were looking down on the made in Japan stuff... I do remember that.

About the food you should be as selective as for your shoes...

About the RMFB - the vests are really top notch = heavy nylon - top leather - generous instant warmth down fill - thick sheep collar (christy vest)... but after all it's only a down vest so you really have to be a fan of repro designs - they are many mountaineering brands that produce great vests for more than half the price... The plus would be ageing as a repro design still looks good when beat down.

Penfield is not bad ! the materials are just more fitted to the contemporary era ; so a bit thinner. The sheep collars (the one I saw) are not very thick but maybe they are not real. Anyway I think they are quite good products anyway, it depends on what you really want.

Iv'e never handled a Mt. Rainier Design Vest but I really look forward to !
