I stumbled across these beautiful pieces of, both, glassware and naval history recently. Produced by Corning during WWII for the US Navy, this handleless mug was used as a hand warmer by sailors on watch duty. There are many fine examples turning up, at any given time, on eBay.

Nice catch. Interestingly enough given the context, there are of course many fine Japanese examples of this technology.
