Adidas Stan Smith

Words

While Adidas continue to struggle putting the right foot forward, they have recognized a few good steps from their past recently, namely the Stan Smith. With a controlled release last year, followed by an exclusive Consortium pack, the general release version comes in three colours this spring: red, navy and, of course, the classic green. It's a great, simple sneaker and nobody would deny it. While I'm very tempted to pick up a pair myself, I still have a hard time committing to a brand I feel has somewhat lost its way within the modern market.

Interesting. Is 'lost its way within the modern market' just a way of saying unfashionable? That's a good thing surely? If you like Adidas, wear Adidas. If you're worried about looking hip wear New Balance. If you're an adult not engaging in sport wear shoes.

the vintage stan smith is one of my all-time favorite sneakers, probably only matched by the nike tennis classic. last time this shoe was retro'd, in 2008, i bought several pairs of the "tournament edition" an amazing shoe that could hold its own with visvims and common projects.

so i was especially excited for this release and promptly picked up two pairs over the internets the day they dropped ... and i was especially disappointed when i opened the box to compare them to previous editions. unfortunately, the quality of the leather and construction is way, way down. also, they decided to do the shoes in "neo white", an unappealingly grayish shade that makes the leather look even more plasticky and cheap.

maybe with time i will come to like them but for right now i am wishing i had handled them in person before i pulled the trigger - would recommend anyone else considering these shoes to do the same.

in all fairness to adidas, the shoes are being sold as "stan smith" and not "stan smith vintage" ... crucial distinction
