Rebels of the Neon God

Words

The Film Society of Lincoln Center will be giving Tsai Ming-liang's legendary debut film Rebels of the Neon God its first ever theatrical release in the West next week, and I implore New Yorkers not to miss it. Despite Ming-liang being one of the most celebrated directors in film's history, his work is woefully hard to view in the US. Hopefully this release will begin to change that, as this film about disillusioned Taipei youth is far from his only masterpiece.

Sunsea Layered Tank Top

01

Images

01. Made in Japan.
02. Available in three combinations.

Words

Last summer I got in the habit of regularly wearing tank tops over long-sleeve shirts, I guess as a way to keep the layering alive through the warmer months. Since most of them didn't survive their first tour of duty, the hunt has began again and seemingly ended with this beautiful layered tank from Japanese brand Sunsea.

Words

There are plenty of interviews on Freunde von Freunden where metropolises such as New York, Paris or London play a central role, but for me some of the most interesting insights can be found in the places I've never visited. That's certainly the case with this look at Athens, home of Kennedy magazine publisher, photographer and DJ, Chris Kontos, which offers a glimpse into the personality of one of Greece's up-and-coming creatives, alongside some of his usual haunts.

Neighbour / Woman & Website Relaunch

Words

This spring Neighbour have been busy. Last month they opened their second store in Gastown, Vancouver, which focuses on an edited selection of womenswear from the likes of Acne, Lemaire, Sunspel, Common Projects and Stephan Schneider, with accessories by Rowena Sartin, Casa Malaspina and Mismo, among others. The new store compliments the Neighbour brand and aesthetic, while providing a long overdue retail destination for females in the neighbourhood. This week they have also relaunched their webstore to include the women's offering, alongside new deliveries for men from Patrik Ervell, Our Legacy and Frank Leder.

Lone Wolf Sweeper Boot

Words

Handmade in Japan by Lone Wolf, Toyo's footwear line, these simple, rugged boots are a great choice for something a little different to similar North American-made styles. Adding to their appeal, the cost is more inline with top quality domestic work boots than the exorbitant price tags Japanese footwear often gets saddled with.

Weekend Listening: John Carpenter's Lost Themes

01

Words

Recently released on the always outstanding Sacred Bones Records, John Carpenter’s Lost Themes takes a step away from the icy, repetitive synth scores he usually pairs with his filmmaking efforts to concentrate on compositions unconnected to the visual medium. His work on films such as The Fog, Halloween and Escape from New York ranks as some of the best and most distinct synthesizer-based music in cinema. These are all fantastic listens in their own right, so I am excited to hear what he has done with the impetus of composing entirely for a standalone album. I've picked up a copy but have not yet found the time to play it; I look forward to taking that opportunity this weekend – free of distractions, to fully digest an unexpected release from one of filmmaking's most interesting composers.
