Words

Neighborhood's Spring-Summer '14 lookbook features their usual mix of Americana-inspired pieces from military to workwear and, of course, some casual styles and patterns. Shot in a simple street style format, it captures the rich tones of the collection against a varied city backdrop.

Mackintosh for F.S.C. Wool-Lined Dunkeld

01

Images

—01. 100% bonded cotton.
—02. Made in Scotland.

Words

I love the idea of a classic Mackintosh coat lined with wool. It makes an already great, poor weather outerwear piece even more resilient in the cold. The styling is very understated, in black bonded cotton with a removable Harris tweed liner, and this distinct version is an exclusive collaboration with Freemans Sporting Club.

Financial Times: Issey Miyake Article

Words

Saturday's edition of the long-running Financial Times supplement, How To Spend It, featured an excellent article about Issey Miyake, underpinned by a rare interview with the designer himself. Written by Mark C. O’Flaherty, I'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in design – fashion or otherwise. Follow the link below to read it online.

Weekend Viewing: The Killers

01

Image

—01. Ava Gardner as Kitty Collins.

Words

Originating from a short story by Ernest Hemingway, The Killers, directed by Robert Siodmak, is the quintessential noir. It features Burt Lancaster in his first movie role as a washed-up prizefighter who is murdered for his involvement in a robbery. Starting at the end, the story reveals the events in a very creative way, with uncredited co-writing from John Huston and Richard Brooks – acknowledged masters of the era.

Illesteva Tribeca Sunglasses

01

Images

—01. Handmade in Italy.
—02. Matte acetate.

Words

I don't know about others, but I still get a a fair bit of wear out of my sunglasses in the colder, darker months. Any day that sees the sun peeking out, causing me to squint, I reach for a pair. This black, oval shaped option with a metal bridge from Illesteva would work well with the more muted colours that are generally associated with winter.

Porter Yoshida Kaban Beat Cotton Canvas Tote Bag

Words

You might have thought the UK-based online retailer would have picked up their namesake accessories line right away, but this spring marks the first offering of the Japanese luggage brand. A selection of totes and backpacks is rounded out with two holdalls and a simple wallet, but this cotton canvas bag was my favourite from their buy.

Weekend Listening: Tiger

Info

Dug Out PR-001
A1: Rap Pon Rydim
B1: Version

Words

Whether I liked it or not, Dancehall was a mainstay in the various vehicles of my Bay Area youth. For an individual like myself, who preferred the harshest rap, metal, jungle and techno the world had to offer, a large portion of the islander riddims were too tame for my taste. One artist who left me with nothing to complain about though was three decade deep Dancehall MC, Tiger. His signature growl of a delivery leaps off the record like a slap in the face, and coupled with a pummeling 909, forces your most base human instincts to rise to the surface. At the end of last year, and not a second too soon, Honest Jon's and Hard Wax's joint label Dug Out rereleased this tune on 7" vinyl.
