The Ny Rocking Chair has been in MoMA's permanent collection since 1970, and is one of the great mid-century minimalist designs. Made of canvas, aluminium and wood, it looks beautiful in its simplicity and is also highly functional, offering a comfortable, unique seating option that folds up to only five inches in width for easy storage.

Amy O'Neill – Red Headed Stranger

01

Image

—01. Published in an edition of 500.

Words

Amy O'Neill is one of the most talented and multi-faceted individuals working in contemporary art today. The bulk of her output is either highly conceptual sculpture or scrappy hand-drawn work, but this book is neither of those things. To put it simply, it is 28 half blank pages filled with pictures of red heads. The seemingly simple book manages to conjure a potent undercurrent of dread as you flip through, to the point where you feel each woman included came to some terrible and well-publicized demise. It's a feeling that's hard to explain, so just pick it up and see for yourself.

Words

Merz b. Schwanen cotton goods are second to none and this T-shirt, based on a 1960s military style, looks to be perfect. Made in Germany utilizing circular knitting machines from the 1920s-50s, the fit is sure to be flawless, while also paying homage to garment manufacture of days gone by.

Corona Wicked Undershirt

01

Image

—01. Made in Japan.

Words

This Corona undershirt would work well as a base layer or a light sweatshirt with a T-shirt underneath. The heather grey cotton, based on Champion sweats from the 1950s, looks fantastic but it's the overlocked raw edges around the neck, cuffs and vented hem that make it most appealing.

Ben Barretto – Surround Sound

Info

Highlight Gallery
17 Kearny Street, San Francisco, CA
Until Saturday April 26, 2014

Words

Surround Sound is Australian artist Ben Barretto's first solo exhibit at San Francisco's Highlight Gallery, and features a selection of new paintings and sculptural works that are largely focused around the modern electric guitar. Using automotive urethane in classic Fender colours, combined with various pieces of guitar hardware and parts, Barretto's paintings each have a sculptural element and evoke the feeling of collage in their execution – a medium the artist has used many times, in more traditional ways, in the past. In addition to the guitar-based pieces Surround Sound also includes a series of sculptures made using custom frames and raw canvas, which evoke car panelling and auto body repair work.
