Converse Addict Jack Purcell

01

Image

—01. Made in Japan.

Words

Converse Japan's Addict line is an elusive and otherwise impossible acquisition for those outside of Japan, but it can't hurt to admire what are quite possibly the simplest and most well designed canvas sneakers available, the Jack Purcell. The Addict version ups the ante with an EVA cup insole and Vibram outsole, as well as a more premium canvas upper.

Sassafras Pruner Half Shirt

01

Image

—01. Linen.

Words

Among the items we've received from Sassafras this season is the Pruner Half Shirt. The long-sleeved popover comes in a great warm weather colour and the lightweight linen houndstooth is a beautiful fabric, with a good amount of texture. It would be perfect on the beach in the summer or you could throw it over a white T-shirt in spring, while it's still a bit cooler out.

Weekend Listening: Flower Travellin' Band – Satori

01

Image

—01. Released in 1971, Atlantic Records Japan.

Words

Satori is the psych-rock masterwork of Japanese heavy-riffing juggernauts Flower Travellin' Band and has been receiving a lot of play around the shop as of late. Comprised of Satori Parts 1 to 5 and carried by the unique vocals of Joe Yamanaka, the four piece were Japan's leading example of a proto heavy metal band in the same vein as Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin. The riffs are endless and really steal the show. If you haven't discovered this gem already, there's every chance you'll be hooked after one listen. It's probably been in my collection for ten years now and this record never gets old.

Words

Whether you're using them actively, as an alternative to smarter options, or just around the house, a pair of sweatshorts can't be bad. Well, maybe they can, but this simple heather charcoal pair from the Todd Snyder + Champion line are a good length and modestly detailed, making them very wearable indeed.

Words

Los Angeles' Matin Gallery has a small but very covetable selection of art and ceramics books to accompany their equally succinct but impressive selection of furniture and pottery from design luminaries such as Donald Judd and John Pawson. The books are obviously more affordable than their incredibly scarce furniture offerings, but even their rarest publications can command four figures.

Words

Spring knitwear can be hit or miss, but find something good and, in Vancouver especially, it can be a great option almost all year round. These organic cotton pieces from Japanese brand Niuhans, botanically dyed to give the soft fabric a neutral tone and a refined character, are an excellent example.

Thom Browne Taped Seam Bal Collar Coat

—01. Four-button cuffs.

Words

This Italian-made, water-repellent coat is a classic looking spring piece, with just a hint of Thom Browne. Half-lined and featuring branded taped seams, the tan Bal Collar Coat provides a nice balance between traditional references and Browne's modern vision.
