Wim Neels Daily Military Pants

01

Images

01. Cotton herringbone.
02. Washed fabric.

Words

I’ve been after a pair of slightly cropped, boxier fitting military pants for a while, and these ones by Wim Neels Daily seem like a very good option. There’s something to be said for the useful pocket configuration, but I think the richly textured herringbone fabric in this lighter tan colour is the real standout.

Unseen 50 Years: Paintings by Ben Morea, 1964-65

June 19 - August 1, 2014

Words

Before launching the influential 1960s anarchist art publications Black Mask and UAW/MF, Ben Morea was an abstract painter in New York City. His work was all believed to be lost, but miraculously five large canvases were discovered under a bed in Hell’s Kitchen. This recently opened exhibition at Boo-Hooray, curated by Johan Kugelberg, marks the first ever showing of these bold 'new' works.

Needles 11oz. Denim Coverall

Words

There are plenty of sales on at the moment, but not so many great items left in good sizes. This Needles jacket, however, is one exception. Made in Japan from an 11oz. charcoal denim, it's a great year-round piece at a very appealing price.

Weekend Viewing: Hearts of Darkness – A Filmmaker's Apocalypse

—01. Francis Ford Coppola.

Words

Aptly titled, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse is culled from documentary footage shot on the set of Apocalypse Now by Francis Ford Coppola’s wife, Eleanor. It shows the unraveling of the director due largely in part to his having to finance the film out of his own pocket, but also under the constraints of a civil war, a typhoon, Martin Sheen’s mid-shoot heart attack, endless studio gossip and Marlon Brando’s unwillingness to cooperate. In the documentary, released on Showtime in 1991, Coppola is constantly shown doubting himself and the artistic merit of a monstrous film, initially scheduled for a 14 week shoot that lasted in excess of 200 days. Tied together with audio clips of Orson Welles’ 1938 radio play of the source material, Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, much of the insight provided by the director was recorded surreptitiously, providing an unrestrained commentary on the project. The documentary now serves as an indispensable companion piece to one of the most epic and artful films ever made about war, brutality, madness and futility, and stands alone as an incredible piece of filmmaking in its own right.

Behind the Scenes: Gosha Rubchinskiy Spring-Summer '15

Words

Gosha Rubchinskiy showed in Paris for the first time this season, and it was his most well-rounded offering to date. The youthful collection included the graphic sweats the brand has become known for, but it also bridged the gap with a variety leather and fur outerwear pieces, beautiful knits, and a healthy dose of colourful cut and sew. It's one of the few younger brands that I've been excited about of late, and these behind the scenes photos give a different perspective to the show imagery on Style.com.

Takahiro Miyashita The Soloist The Jean x.0276

01

Images

—01. 100% Cotton.
—02. Shades of black.

Words

Takahiro Miyashita The Soloist makes a very interesting mix of garments – some wild and somewhat unwearable, while others are very simple and would be easy to mix into your wardrobe. These patchwork jeans fall somewhere in the middle; using vintage scraps, playing with tone and creating a unique shape, the result is a rather distinctive pair of cotton denim pants.

Christophe Lemaire Spring-Summer '15

01

Images

01-02. Monochrome palette.

Words

Unsurprisingly, the Spring–Summer '15 shows have brought a lot of colour and pattern to the runway, but Christophe Lemaire has avoided the least bit of either with his latest offering. Instead, the extremely restrained collection provides plenty of interesting detail through silhouette, fabrication, and the casual structure of its jackets; all of which make for a universally cohesive and wearable selection.
