Hotel Okura
Writer & Photographer Marcelo Gomes
I visited Hotel Okura for the first time on my last trip to Tokyo in May of 2014. A Japanese friend had suggested I go to see it, since I’d told him I was trying to shoot as much architecture as I could while staying in the city. It’s interesting that I was going all over Tokyo chasing Metabolist buildings (which I’d been reading quite a bit about) and that the Okura left the strongest impression. It looks to me like a simple and sophisticated melody, and shows the perfect confluence between what I imagine are grand American and traditional Japanese notions of space and lighting.
