Weekend Viewing: Experiments In Speed

Video

Director: Greg Hackett
Editor: Tim Swaby
Production Company: Spindle Productions

Words

There's a great satisfaction to be taken in seeing friends of yours endeavor to succeed in doing something that they love. Tom Donohou created his own bespoke bike building company a few years ago, but his interest in design, and the urge to push his own limits, resulted in months of hard work and the above short film.

Weekend Viewing: Inside Sunspel

Video

Filmed, Directed and Edited by Danny Cooke
Timelapse Photography by Alex Thornton
Production by Laura Holmes Production

Sunspel have been making simple, wearable, yet premium knit goods for a very long time. I'm a fan of their Egyptian cotton t-shirts, but this beautifully shot video showcases the making of one of their Sea Island cotton garments.

Weekend Veiwing: A Study of Legs

01

Video

—01. A film in 11 parts.

Words

An old one but a good one, and if you haven't seen it well worth just over 20 minutes of your time. Shot for a month during lunch breaks between winter and spring 2009, the imagery was captured on the streets of Midtown Manhattan by Atsushi Nishijima (aka JIMA). The resulting film by Jim Helton, with sound by Dan Flosdorf, was then screened as part of a charity event for Japan on May 24th, 2011.

Weekend Viewing: Jela

Video

Film by Will Robson-Scott
Edited by Luca Campanale
Music by Makoto Masui

Words

Will Robson-Scott has a knack for capturing characters in a realistic and true light, whether via the medium of film or photography. His latest short, titled simply "Jela", is yet another great example of Will's ability to make his subjects perfectly at ease in his presence, allowing their true personalities to shine through. The film's central character Jela grew up in London's East End, and the film uses those streets as a background to the story of his life there; growing up in the 80s and 90s and immersed in football hooliganism, skinhead subculture, and heavy drug use.

Weekend Viewing: Badlands

Words

Terrence Malick's debut, starring a James Dean-esque Martin Sheen alongside Sissy Spacek, is a poetic and beautiful take on the traditional outlaw-couple-on-the-run Hollywood narrative. While it took Malick five years to make his sophomore feature, Days of Heaven, and a further two decades for his third film, The Thin Red Line, Badlands was the original catalyst for all that followed from the acclaimed director. Emmanuel Lubezk, his Director of Photography on his latest two films – 2011's Tree of Life and 2013's To The Wonder – oversaw a newly restored version of the seminal release, which is currently playing at New York's Film Forum, as a limited engagement until May 18th.

Weekend Viewing: How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr. Foster?

01

Video

—01. By Norberto López Amado and Carlos Carcas.

Words

Although this excellent documentary originally came out in 2010, it took me until this past week to finally get around to viewing it. Thanks Netflix. I highly recommend that if it's cold and wet out where you are, or you otherwise have a little time on your hands this weekend, that you track down a copy and take in the work of one of Britain's most well-known and influential architects. After all: who doesn't love the Gherkin?
