Cuba by Quentin de Briey

01

Images

01. Viñales.
02. Accommodation and amenities.

Words

Recent political and diplomatic developments have Cuba regularly making the news here in the US. And for all the right reasons for a change. No longer on a ridiculous list of terrorist supporting countries, and with trade and travel restrictions lifted, direct flights from the US to Havana have now begun to operate. Cheap accommodation and mind-blowing experiences surely await, and acting quickly is probably key, before the country gets blown out by bros looking for a cheap place to 'get away' for a bachelor party. Friend and contributor to Inventory Quentin de Briey had none of these things to worry about. A European passport and a desire to see and document the country with his girlfriend led him there. The photos from their travels have just been published online by Purple, offering extra motivation for those of us who have been looking for a reason to get away somewhere warm, and somewhere not New York.

C.F. – Mere

01

Image

01. A collection of previously sold out zines.

Words

While not one of the major names to break out of the Providence art or noise scene, C.F. has quietly been amassing praise from a wide spectrum of art lovers. Since my childhood attendance of the Last Gasp warehouse parties, I have been constantly on the lookout for the most bizarre comics available, and C.F.'s disorienting cyber crime aesthetic fits the bill perfectly. Originally a series of zines, the long out-of-print comics are collected here for the first time.

Anachronorm Satin Easy Pants

01

Images

01. Single back pocket.
02. Sulfide dyed.

Words

It isn't a hangup I expect everyone to have when it comes to pants, but I don't normally advocate for a flyless, slightly amorphous shape with a drawstring waistband. There is something about this pair, however, that has me reconsidering that judgement. The details are exceptional, not least the sulfide dyed fabric and the uniqueness of a single back pocket on a fatigue style.

Remembering the Streetwise Photographer

01

Image

01. Photograph by Mary Ellen Mark.

Words

Of all the documentaries that have attempted to capture the often grisly details of life on the street, the most successful is perhaps the 1984 film Streetwise. Directed by Martin Bell and photographed by Mary Ellen Mark, it follows a small group of teenage runaways through their daily lives in the gutters of Seattle. When I first saw it, the effects were hard to shake, intensified by the fact that my mom grew up on the same streets not long before they started making the film. The feeling of shattered innocence looms over every shot, captured beautifully by Mark. I was very sad to hear that she had passed away last week, but you can learn more about her life and process in this fascinating interview recently published by Dazed.

Varg – Ursviken

Images

01. Ursviken.
02. Northern Electronics.

Words

Swedish techno maestro Varg is an incredibly prolific personality in the world of underground music. His records possess the same icy talons that grab you while watching an Ingmar Bergman film, creating the sense that the walls around you are closing in. Ursviken comes courtesy of Northern Electronics, the label he runs with fellow Swede Abdulla Rashim, which has quickly become the go-to name for beautiful dance floor intended melancholia.

Comoli Open Collar Shirt

01

Image

01. Navy typewriter cloth.

Words

While predominantly a very basic seeming shirt, this short-sleeved option from the Japanese brand Comoli would get you through the hottest parts of the summer in style. The cotton typewriter cloth is lightweight and the fit is perfect, exhibiting a boxy cut with a straight hem that would work well with trousers, shorts or jeans. This solid coloured, casual button-up strikes me as the right choice for someone who might like the laid-back appearance of an aloha shirt, but isn’t comfortable wearing the flamboyant patterns often employed in their design.

Exercises in Seating by Max Lamb

01

Image

01. Designed by Åbäke.

Words

At Milan Design Week 2015, British designer Max Lamb was the subject of a retrospective featuring 40 of his chairs from over the last 10 years entitled Exercises in Seating. A catalogue of the event has been released profiling not only the chairs themselves but also their construction, as well as a miscellany of other imagery – all clad in a DIY-looking newsprint and plastic package.
