Words

As one acquires more and more publications, the idea of a series of portable shelves for ease of rearranging, adding to, and relocating seems like a really attractive idea. This option from Cow Books has had some serious thought put into it. Inspired by the shelving used at Serendipity in Berkeley – the influential but now closed bookstore founded by Peter B. Howard in the early '60s – it features a beautiful handmade character and gives your favourite titles the place of distinction they deserve.

Missoni Spring-Summer '16

Words

On Sunday afternoon in Milan, Missoni's latest men's collection took us to India, with plenty of references to The Darjeeling Limited. The tones and textures played perfectly together, combining to present a fine vision of casual luxury. Collaborations with Converse, Malibu Sandals and Globe-Trotter added an extra level of interest, but it was the small details that really stood out. Everything was very intricate without feeling too delicate to actually wear, and in the end that's just what I like from my clothes.

Deviate From Balance by John Wiese

Info

Softcover, perfect bound
64 pages, 6.5 x 9 inches
Edition of 500

Words

John Wiese is probably most recognized in music circles for his participation and collaboration with Sissy Spacek, Wolf Eyes and Sunn O))), as well as releasing records under his own name. He's by no means given this up, but a lot of his present endeavours revolve around sound installation, video, collage, photography, typography and graphic sound scores. On top of this array of activities, Wiese is the co-founder of Hesse Press, the small publishing house that issued this monograph. Deviate From Balance catalogues his latest art practices in a beautifully designed edition of 500. It should also be noted that to coincide with the book's release, Gilgongo Records put out a companion album of the same title which would give you a complete picture of Wiese’s multitalented explorations.

Hot Light/Half-Made Worlds: Photographs from the Tropics by Alex Webb

Info

Hardcover
96 pages, 12.5 x 10.8 inches
Published by Thames & Hudson, 1986

Words

Some photobooks are just so rare that you have to shell out a couple of hundred bucks to get your hands on an original copy. Having never been reissued, Hot Light/Half-Made Worlds: Photographs from the Tropics is one of those volumes that makes me contemplate doing so. Alex Webb is a member of the Magnum Photos stable, a long-running photographic cooperative originally established by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David Seymour in 1947. The photographs in this book – shot in Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, Africa and Asia – feature an astoundingly rich colour palette and convey the reality of each location through exceptional, seemingly off-the-cuff compositions of daily life.

Wacko Maria 50s S/S Shirt

01

01. Cotton/lyocell blend.

Words

While Wacko Maria has definitely been on my radar over the years, it is only this season that I got my hands on something from the brand. I think the floodgates are open, and the Japanese label is one that I am certainly paying a lot more attention to. In fact, I may have found the next piece on my wish list in this outstanding 50s-inspired bowling shirt. Although the style might look a little throwback, there is nothing outlandish going on and all of the details are impressively handled – from the silky cotton/lyocell fabric, right down to the dual deployment of chain stitch embroidery.
