Freemans Sporting Club Made in Japan Collection

To coincide with the opening of a second shop in Tokyo, Freemans Sporting Club have just released their inaugural Made in Japan collection. The small range includes accessories, some attractive knitwear, and a collaboration with Loopwheeler featuring crew necks and hooded sweatshirts woven on 1920s looms. The tight selection is an impressive first offering of Japanese-made items from the decade old US company.

In spite of locations at Dover Street Market in London and New York, and the Comme des Garçons Trading Museum in Paris, IDEA Books is perhaps best known for its Instagram. With a growing following online, the London-based company has done an exceptional job with product and delivery to capture a modern audience. On a recent trip to London, Chris Black visited co-founder David Owen to speak about their growth, and have a look inside their modest studio.

Levi’s Authorized Vintage

Levi’s has been offering reproduced period pieces through their Vintage Clothing line for years, but now the iconic American brand is embracing its history even further with a series of products that have been refurbished and reconditioned by Lot, Stock and Barrel in LA. The collection comprises 501, 505 and 517 jeans, 501 and 505 cut-off shorts, and Big and Little E versions of the Trucker Jacket. There are a number of truly unique items in the range, embellished with chain stitch embroidery and graphic treatments, which are only available at Levi's latest locations in Las Vegas and Brooklyn.

Ed Ruscha – Metro Mattresses

"Ed Ruscha has been casting his eye across the landscapes of the American west for over 50 years, taking in everything from gas stations to swimming pools to sublime mountain ranges. With their clarity and deadpan wit, his photographs, drawings and paintings impart a mood of playful awe on everyday monuments. The motifs for his new series Metro Mattresses were found, like so many of the subjects of his work, on the streets of Los Angeles. In each of the twelve works in the series we encounter a mattress, or mattresses, isolated and in various states of neglect, all depicted against a neutral backdrop.

Mattresses are evocative objects: repositories of dreams, essential yet private, at once mundane and lush with possibility. When a mattress wears out, it becomes a cumbersome slab of raw intimacy that needs to be discarded. Ruscha noticed the mattresses cast aside on the streets of LA and began photographing them systematically before translating the images into pictures on paper-like museum board. The consistent neutral background emphasizes the typological nature and the heightened formality of the series, transforming the boxes of springs and padding into geometric abstractions. Yet the rhomboids and rectangles slump and fold with age, while the jagged rips and occasional trickles of fluid remind us that the mattresses have absorbed countless intimate experiences."

Inform, one of our perennially favourite design stores in Vancouver, is now offering two of the most appealing desk lamp designs from Anglepoise in a variety of colours. The longstanding Gastown retailer has recently made the Original 1227 and Type 75 models available for purchase online, including an elegant variation on the former that features contrasting brass fittings.

Tender Co. Type 750 Ladder Back Pullover

Tender Co., seemingly born from a continuing fascination with denim fabrics, natural dyes and steam powered railways, is probably most recognized for its unique jean designs and shirt styles, but another thing the British brand quietly excels at is knitwear. This crew neck is exquisite yet still perfectly simple, relying on warm Shetland wool and a distinctive ladder back construction to do all the talking.

Brazil certainly isn't the first country I think of when it comes to contemporary furniture design, but the current exhibition at R & Company is changing my perspective. Featuring important designs, textiles and ephemera from the 20th century, the show includes pieces from Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo between the late 1940s and early 1970s.
